Are you struggling with recharging your prepaid electricity meter lately? Or like most Batswana, have realised that your electricity slip has extra recharge numbers more than you are used to? That is because Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is currently upgrading its meters to a new system that is more reliable and up to date with the latest technological developments.

In this guide, we will walk you through how to recharge your meter, and in the process update your meter to a new software according to new global standards.

All electricity prepaid meters’ software is being updated country-wide. This exercise needs to be completed by November 2024. Botswana has begun the process of updating all its prepaid meters country-wide.

Botswana Power Corporation has embarked on a TID rollover exercise to upgrade all prepaid meter software, effective from the 8th of April until the 31st of July 2024. This exercise covers all types of prepaid electricity meters.

In the following video, we will show you how to use your new electricity token to recharge, update, and rollover your prepaid meter into a new system.

Otherwise, read on and follow these steps and you can ensure your electricity meter is ready for the TID rollover:

  1. Step one, buy electricity

The receipt will come out with three tokens.

  1. Step two, enter the three tokens sequentially beginning with the first one. Ensure to press Enter after each token.

After entering the token successfully, you will have credited and upgraded your meter.

That’s it. You’re done.

RETRIEVING OTHER 2 TOKENS

If you have received one token during purchase you can now retrieve the other two tokens.

Just follow these simple steps:

  • Dial *192# from any mobile operator
  • Choose Option 4 (Get TID Tokens)
  • Enter the Meter Number you would like to retrieve the TID Tokens for

You will receive two (2) Key Change Tokens to upgrade your meter

If your meter is rejecting the tokens even after repeated tries, do check if:

  1. You have punched in the correct digits.
  1. You are entering the TID tokens in the correct order as printed out
  1. You don’t delay between entering tokens.

Going forward, you will buy and receive the credit token as usual. The exercise to enter TID tokens is a once-off activity, which is meant to upgrade and update your meter’s software. This will ensure that your meter continues to function with the new system of generating prepaid electricity tokens.

Your prepaid meter has been updated. Now you will be able to recharge your electricity in the normal that you have been doing all along.
